Alert for "Wave-Submersion" in Coastal Regions
The French coastal regions of the English Channel, Ille-et-Vilaine, Côtes-d'Armor, and Finistère have been placed on orange alert for "wave-submersion" by Météo-France. This warning comes as a result of the depression named Patricia, which is causing unusually strong winds and high waves during a period of high tides. The meteorological service has advised caution and issued guidelines for those planning to engage in activities near the sea during this time.
Precautions for Coastal Activities
According to the prefectural statement, all sea users, especially those participating in coastal activities such as fishing or walking, are urged to take precautions due to the increased risk of being stranded by the tide. The maritime prefecture recommends checking the weather forecast before heading out to sea, avoiding going alone, and ensuring the ability to communicate with the outside world. They also advise keeping a visual reference point on the coast. In case of emergency, the number 196 can be dialed to contact the sea rescue services.
Worsening Weather Conditions
The weather conditions are expected to worsen throughout the day, with the highest waves predicted for the evening during high tide along the Atlantic coast and the English Channel. In the morning, there will be rainy weather from the north of Aquitaine to the northeast of the country. The sky will remain overcast in the northwest, with showers developing throughout the day. The showers will become more frequent in the afternoon and will be accompanied by winds reaching 100 kilometers per hour in gusts along the Breton coast and the English Channel.
High Wind Speeds and Sea Conditions
Strong waves are expected along the entire coastline, and there will also be a noticeable west wind from the Gironde estuary to the Center-East and the Grand-Est regions. Further south, the day will start with sunshine, but the sky will become cloudy over Aquitaine and Occitanie as the hours pass. Some rain is expected from the southwest to the Center-East due to the approaching disturbance.
Unusual Weather for the Season
While this type of depression typically occurs in the autumn and especially in winter, it is unusual for this time of year. The strong winds are forecasted to hit the northwest of France on Wednesday, August 2nd. In Brittany, gusts could reach 100 kilometers per hour along the coast and 80 kilometers per hour inland. This situation has been described as "exceptional" for this season by La Chaîne Météo.
