Barbie movie beats Marvel and Super Mario at the box office
Barbie movie beats out Marvel films and sets records with $155 million in ticket sales, while Oppenheimer also performs well, benefiting from the Barbenheimer trend.
Steven
Hey Stephany, did you see that Barbie movie won the box office battle in the US?
Stephany
Yes, I did! It's quite surprising, isn't it? Barbie beating out all the Marvel movies and even The Super Mario Bros Movie for the biggest opening of the year.
Steven
Absolutely! Barbie made a whopping 155 million dollars in ticket sales from North American cinemas. And it also broke the first weekend record for a film directed by a woman.
Stephany
That's impressive. But let's not forget Oppenheimer, the biographical drama about physicist J Robert Oppenheimer. It also did really well, earning 80.5 million dollars from cinemas in the US and Canada.
Steven
That's true. Oppenheimer had a great opening too, and it's Christopher Nolan's biggest non-Batman debut. It's interesting how both movies benefited from the Barbenheimer phenomenon.
Stephany
Definitely. The Barbenheimer trend of watching both Barbie and Oppenheimer as a double bill really boosted ticket sales. Vue International, a cinema chain, even reported its biggest weekend for UK cinema ticket sales in four years because of it.
Steven
It's amazing how a social media trend can have such an impact. Vue had over 2,000 sold-out screenings for Barbie alone. And internationally, Barbie earned a whopping 182 million dollars from 69 territories.
Stephany
That's incredible. And Oppenheimer did well internationally too, earning 93.7 million dollars from 78 territories. It's clear that people were excited to see both movies.
Steven
Absolutely. But it's not all good news for the industry. There are still strikes and disputes between Hollywood studios and actors and writers over fair contracts.
Stephany
That's true. It's a shame that such a successful weekend for the box office is overshadowed by those issues. But overall, it's a positive moment for the industry, and I hope this trend continues.
Steven
Agreed. It's a joyous time in the world, as Jeff Goldstein, Warner Bros's president of domestic distribution, said. But hey, I have to go. I must catch a screening of Barbie before it's sold out. Excuse me.
Stephany
No problem, Steven. Enjoy the movie!
